Crabbs | NDT Premium Bradley Chubb Assessment

Throughout the summer, National Scout Jon Ledyard, Assistant Director Joe Marino and Scouting Director Kyle Crabbs will be conducting summer assessments on 99 notable senior prospects. Of these 99 seniors, the 33 most prominent will be covered by all three analysts.Of the remaining 66, each of the three analysts has “drafted” 22 of them to scout exclusively.

This serves as the foundation for our 2018 draft assessments.

Strengths

Has a great awareness of how to optimize movement and transitions. Surprisingly quick and nimble playing along the line of scrimmage to peel off and challenge the ball or attack a late manifesting gap. Has very powerful hands to supplement post-engagement skills and is consistent in efforts to establish a firm punch and reset the line of scrimmage. Has desirable length; allowing for good results in all as a run defender to stack blockers and locate the football.

Plays with a tremendous motor, consistently making second effort plays after initial effort is either countered or fails. Shows admirable cornering skills as a pass rusher to flatten after working hip to hip with pass protectors. Wins most consistently with a one arm stab countered into a shoulder dip and rip. Will play with strength to press through contact as a rusher and create favorable angles.

Weaknesses

Natural burst and acceleration skills appear to be only above average. Fails to showcase a great deal of ground taken in initial release off the line as a pass rusher. Chubb could afford to continue to introduce additional pass rush counters to his arsenal; he does not have the twitch or snap anticipation to win with consistency at the next level without additional moves for once initial attack is stonewalled. Appears to take some poor angles when addressing offensive tackles, will bite off more than he can chew; resulting in him locking horns square with Tackles and preventing him from disengaging or cleanly countering.

Summary

North Carolina State Defensive End Bradley Chubb has the look of a late 1st or early 2nd round player as he enters his final season with the Wolfpack. He reminds me some of first round pick and current Philadelphia Eagle Derek Barnett in that his wins frequently come with a dip/rip combination, quality cornering skills and functional strength as a rusher.

Chubb is also similar to Barnett in his physicality with his hands; he’s a heavy handed defender capable of winning with a first strike. This power enables him to be a consistent positive force against the run and he does showcase desirable length and disengagement skills to consistently challenge the ball carrier if runs are carried into his vicinity.

What will likely limit Chubb’s ceiling is what looks to be a limited explosive skill set. He’s most certainly an above average athlete but Chubb doesn’t have the “special” burst or lower body reactive power to be considered a blue chip or true game changing prospect at this point. Getting more consistent with his snap anticipation and adding additional counters to his pass rush skills are two things I’m hoping to see from Chubb in 2017 to further optimize his draft profile.

Projected value: Early Day 2 range
