NDT Premium | Baker Mayfield Senior Assessment

Throughout the summer, National Scout Jon Ledyard, Assistant Director Joe Marino and Scouting Director Kyle Crabbs will be conducting summer assessments on 99 notable senior prospects. Of these 99 seniors, the 33 most prominent will be covered by all three analysts.

Of the remaining 66, each of the three analysts has “drafted” 22 of them to scout exclusively.

This serves as the foundation for our 2018 draft assessments and access to the full roster is part of a NDT Scouting Premium membership. To celebrate the kickoff of NDT Scouting’s summer work, this preseason senior outlook on Oklahoma Quarterback Baker Mayfield is complimentary to all.

Film Assessment

Games watched: Oklahoma State (2016), West Virginia (2016), Baylor (2016), Kansas (2016)

Shows good athleticism as a means of avoiding rushers both in the pocket and into the boundary. Has great creativity and willing to alter body position, arm slot and release point as a means of ensuring a cleanly delivered throw. Is accurate in the short areas of the field. Decisive with reps working with dual stems and is especially quick on the trigger when facing off coverage. Has requisite arm strength to push the ball down the field with authority; can put strong velocity on throws when getting weight into delivery.

Freestyle approach and mechanics often lead to complacency with passing landmarks. Won’t get the front foot or lead shoulder set to target before throwing and as a result will experience some notable irregularities with placement. Will constantly put crossing throws too tight to the hip; needs to get more comfortable putting the ball out in front of receivers’ chest. Works in a fairly elementary offense for reads; featured primarily in the gun with a lot of inside zone or RPO action in the backfield. Stature could be problematic; is tough as nails but seeing over line of scrimmage from the pocket will be a challenge.

Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield enters 2017 as one of the stars of college football. His redshirt senior season will be essential to helping scouts and personnel get over his ugly public intoxication arrest from the winter. Mayfield was tackled by police after attempting to flee a questioning outside of a club.

On the field, Mayfield is an exciting athlete with the free lance ability to make something happen out of nothing; his creativity and willingness to take calculated risks are his best assets. Mayfield is not overly risky with the football in spite of his unscripted plays, something which should encourage coaches who hope to capture lightning in a bottle. In all, Mayfield needs to stay committed to continuing to hone in on the technical side of passing the ball to boost his accuracy beyond the short areas of the field. His mechanics and footwork are the root of most of his issues and resolutions there would notably improve his pro prospects.

Preseason valuation: Projected Early Day 3 Range
