Marino | Rashard Fant shines in Hoosiers win over Virginia

Indiana Hoosiers v Virginia Cavaliers

Saturday September 9, 2017

Scott Stadium/Charlottesville, Virginia

Score:  Indian (34), Virginia (17)

Notable Prospects Entering the Contest

Virginia Cavaliers

Andrew Brown, DL, Senior:  Strong stack, shed and finish lining up as a 5T in a two-gapping situation. Demonstrates good power at the POA. Challenged in read-option situation, shucked block, remained parallel and finished while demonstrating good lateral movement skills. Surprising amount of flexibility to turn the corner off the edge. Pressure forced QB to set up for 2nd Kiser sack. Stock – Same

Micah Kiser, LB, Senior:  Showed strong ability to blitz from distance. Times his rush perfectly and anticipates the quarterbacks movement. Has been a strength of his game throughout career and it showed up again today. Clean tackler that does well to square his hips and wrap up.  Stock – Same

Quin Blanding, S, Senior:  Two outstanding finishes in space in the first half, due in large to his fast processing skills and taking proper angles to the football. Allowed vertical separation on seam route to TE Thomas but was bailed out by poor throw. Consistent finisher and routinely positioned himself well. Stock – Same

Juan Thornhill, CB, Junior:  Highlight reel interception while staying inside and on top of the route, full extension to secure the ball. Lost track of his man on vertical route that resulted in 32-yard TD reception. Bounced back for strong PBU in man coverage when tested on go route, demonstrating ball skills and play strength at the catch point.  Stock – Same

Indiana Hoosiers

Richard Lagow, QB, Senior:  Climbed pocket on 3rd and long, hit laser in the MOF. Recognized heavy blitz, broke first wave of rushers for long scramble with vacated second level. Ball placement and comfort declined rapidly. Several misfires and was replaced in 2nd quarter by Freshman Peyton Ramsey and Hoosiers offensive production increased significantly. Stock – Down

Simmie Cobbs, WR, Junior:  Terrific effort after the catch on 29-yard TD reception. Made three defenders miss in space, demonstrating speed and physicality. Called for OPI with obvious push off. High volume of targets in one-on-one situations but ball placement wasn’t always ideal. Highlight reel one-handed catch with CB draped on him. Stock – Same

Ian Thomas, TE, Senior:  Created separation down the seam vertically against Quin Blanding, beating him by two steps but ball was overthrown. Found space against zone coverage and displayed impressive physicality after the catch.  Stock – Same

Tegray Scales, LB, Senior:  Lacks natural feel for shifting through traffic and playing through contact. Failed to make noticeable impact on this game. Apparent he is better when kept clean of blockers. Stock – Same

Rashard Fant, CB, Senior:  Played aggressively in the contact window with balanced feet and active hands. Strong click and close ability on TFL to drive off his back foot on WR screen. Able to play through contact to work to the football. Challenged vertically and did well to remain in phase while squeezing the route to the sideline. Allowed separation on crossing pattern that lead to a third down conversion and also missed the tackle – wrapped up but slid off. Challenged vertically again, remained in phase and timed his leap to perfectly to break up the pass. Ran stride-for-stride in another vertical pass resulting in incomplete pass. Read the quarterback perfectly in zone coverage, peeled off his man to work into the throwing lane.  Stock – Up
