Crabbs | Young talent steals show in Sun Devils upset over Oregon

#25 Oregon Ducks at Arizona State Sun Devils

Sun Devil Stadium – Tempe, AZ

Score: Oregon (35), Arizona State (37)

Oregon Ducks

#21 Royce Freeman, RB (Senior)

Doesn’t have the speed to get the edge on a 3rd down screen; caught and rolled to the ground by trailing defender. Misses cut right opportunity in between the tackles to potentially spring a big gain. Good pad level on A-gap run; absorbs filling LB at full speed. Lackadaisical effort on an interior pass protection; didn’t look for work and didn’t sell a pass release. Takes advantage of a soft corner to work for big gain of 10; cuts are not especially fluid or hard but momentum is notable when running north/south. Gains the corner (soft edge) courtesy of pulling guard; seems to really labor to stick foot in the ground and drive forward (touchdown on the play). Outside stretch yields little result, unable to drive foot in the ground and work up the field into a crease.

#73 Tyrell Crosby, OT (Senior)

Big, boxy square frame; does well to cinch hands tight inside and envelope defender at the point of attack. Wide frame in pass set; does well to move feet and keep body positioning to protect on a long/deep drop. Good motor to accelerate and walk back defender inside the 10 for a power sweep.

#10 Justin Herbert, QB (Sophomore)*

Perfect strike on first throw of the game, picking up a vertical route up the far sideline (drop). Good strike up the hash line on a trips set, MOF Safety takes crossing route and Herbert slots ball to skinny post behind it. Next play is a *DART* into tight man to man; 19 yard gain to TE. Back shoulder toss on wheel route: great touch and accurate placement for a touchdown. Trips concepts are shredding Sun Devils, Herbert continues to make good decisions with the football. Patient allowing deep route patterns to develop. Fails to process pressure package, protection scheme is out-manned at the snap but Herbert’s eyes go the other way. Pressure forces an early throw; preventing good stride into pass (ball sails high). Missed the pass but good decision based on Cover-0 secondary vs. pressure look. Accurate on sideline comeback pattern. Touch up the seam to a streaking TE; accurate and on time. Pass called incomplete but ball put in a perfect spot. Far sideline throw is accurate, although a touch late, and complete on 2nd and 20. Standing tough in the pocket, not phased by peripheral bodies; holds ball until last possible second but allows defenders to influence mechanics (incomplete). Another accurate seam throw on 3rd and long; but receiver fails to challenge the ball and defender plays around body to break up the pass. Wonderful touch up the near sideline to drop 22-yard touchdown into the corner of the end zone. When not challenged with flashing bodies in the pocket has been very strong. Has destroyed Sun Devils between the hashes in the second half; finding TE on another seam route and big gainer. Pulls a zone read look inside the 5 and tucks up behind back to score touchdown midway through the 4th QTR.

Arizona State Sun Devils

#7 Kalen Ballage, RB (Senior)

Smooth; works out of the backfield on a swing route. Athleticism/size profile is tremendous, both up close and from afar. Ability to accelerate to a second gear is strong. HARD run up between the tackles; afforded good space breaking off of a power run set for a gain of 8. Initial patience to pick through first five yards before exploding up the field and picking up big 18 yard gain. Another chunk gain on a swing route; has been active early on here as a receiver. Natural catching the ball with his hands. Picks up some hollow yards on a 3rd and 30 draw play; but again very natural with transitions out of cuts in the open field. Has been implemented on return duties, has had numerous returns making first body miss and then transitioning into an up-field runner in effort to optimize gain. Great work in pass protection to work back to the side of the pocket, protecting his passer and chopping down an edge rusher.

#4 Demario Richard, RB (Senior)

Nice leg drive between the tackles to pick up a few extra yards after contact. Is fed the ball on three consecutive snaps; likable confidence in pressing up into the LOS and getting plus yards. Goes over the top on a short yardage, nice job slipping past Center; who had been walked back into the backfield. Seems to be the least dynamic back of the trio; has good approach between the tackles but not sold on burst to accelerate and hit a hole. Good spin move at the POA to bounce and break contain for a gain of 8 yards. Follows up on next carry with a definitive power run, putting head down and challenging tackler in the hole for a 1st down. At best when making a quick step and breaking forward; needs to be offered a clear alleyway to make a splash play.

#4 Koron Crump, EDGE (Senior)

It was announced on Thursday that Crump would not play in this contest due to a left leg injury. Injury is rumored to be a season ending.

Other Players that Flashed

ASU WR N’Keal Harry (Sophomore)

Big body. Physical at the catch point and shows a good level of movement skills in the open field. Had a spectacular effort to stay balanced after absorbing two hits in the middle of the field for a big catch and run. Was probably the best player on the field all game.

ASU DE AJ Latu (Redshirt Senior)

Had a nice penetration play on jet sweep to get into legs of ball carrier and cut down for a big loss of five. Showed good redirection on the play to react to the mesh point.

ASU RB/WR Kyle Williams (Sophomore)

Sun Devils made conscious effort to feed Williams the ball; electric on both runs and RAC opportunities. Has good burst and wiggle through the hips, bringing an extra element in comparison to most other teammates when holding the ball.

Best Players on the Field

ASU WR N’Keal Harry (Sophomore)

Oregon QB Justin Herbert (Sophomore)

Forgettable Performances

Defensive backs for both teams

ASU RB Demario Richard
