Crabbs | Carrington shines bright as Utah survives late Arizona push

#23 Utah Utes at Arizona Wildcats

09/22/2017

Arizona Stadium – Tucson, AZ

Score: Utah (30), Arizona (24)

Utah Utes

Darren Carrington, WR (Graduate Transfer, Oregon)

Sharp comeback pattern as the isolated receiver vs. trips on other side. Throws block on next play, offering good push on DB. Physical on the boundary with hands on a bounced run to near sideline. Sloppy delay route, not very convincing. Good effort once up the sideline to adjust body and address the ball, but thrown out of bounds. Acceleration with ball in hands (bubble throw) is good; just missing the corner after 9 yard gain. Pushing his luck on a late challenge as a blocker after hard vertical stem. Works from the slot; great job elevating and plucking the football directly off the top of defender’s helmet for a 40 yard gain on 3rd and long; good acceleration on stem. QUICK acceleration, difficult to miss here in the red zone; gets quality push up the field but not targeted. Good hands reception on a late thrown football. Good track of vertical throw on the very next rep; showing late acceleration and good extension but fails to finish the catch going to the ground.

Kylie Fitts, DE (Redshirt Senior)

Good lateral mobility to work back off of a squeeze and challenge/finish a QB keep on option look. Looks heavy with feet unblocked off the backside; struggles to get in QB’s hip pocket on pulling sweep. Ridden well beyond initial gap, failing to get off of contact and work back to the football. Nice job stacking block and keeping head clean outside on sweep to make tackle at the LOS. Misses tackle on a would be clean challenge; QB run working into the boundary; left grabbing air. Can’t quite turn the corner and work hips around blocker when trying to dip the shoulder and rip through B-gap. Fails to disengage inside arm after QB steps up in the pocket; instead gets caught trying to reach across his body to disrupt. Rolled up on late in the 1st half; struggled to come off the field under own power.

Lowell Lotulelei, DT (Senior)

Drops hips and bows back with locked horns vs. LG; late disengage to finish play. Not using his hands on a slant; gives up chest and offers minimal push to collapse the POA. Called for offsides on a 4th and inches rep early in the 2nd QTR, making contact with OL. Good lateral step to react and mirror offensive slide protection and sustain gap integrity. Beaten across face on a slide protection; loses leverage and fails to hold ground when playing lateral. Massive hit on QB to force an interception. QB held ball excessively long but once uncovered was able to generate powerful charge and explode into hit. Has been negated by Arizona playcalling; has struggled to make an impact facing double teams with frequency.

Stock: Same

Filipo Mokofisi, DT (Senior)

Has been pretty active up front in the 1st QTR, disruptive along the front from both head up and gap alignments. Good push on a short yardage pass rush to help collapse the pocket. Looks stiff in a bucket pull; shoulders popping up out of stance. Late scrape on a dive to wrap up and minimize what could’ve been a large gain; good finish. Swim move on the interior to quickly penetrate and hit QB on a deep throw attempt; clean hit. Uprooted trying to scrape a gap, failed to keep pad level down and play with hands to press blocker. Delivers a crushing final blow in 2 minute drill to force a high throw and an interception to seal the game.

Arizona Wildcats

Nick Wilson, RB (Senior)

Very limited touches throughout the first half. Did get one clean alley to run the football down inside the 10; did not look to have the juice of productive freshman season. Non-explosive on the run. Drops a wide open wheel route which would have walked into the end zone late in the game, which Arizona was trailing by 10 at the time.

Other Players that Flashed

Utah Left Guard Salesi Uhatafe, Senior

Big, powerful frame and a heavy anchor. Hands pop with notable power to jolt at first contact. Great pulling set in pass protection; catches defensive end square and does well to roll hips through the hit. Balanced pass set on a man protection; does well to move feet and stay framed on the defender during a 3rd down pass attempt in the red zone. Hit with a holding penalty of QB scramble early in the 2nd half; flying blind as QB flushed pocket. Needs to know when to let hands go in that instance.

Utah PK Matt Gay, Senior
