2018 North Carolina prospect primer

Below are notable North Carolina prospects eligible for the 2018 NFL Draft. Coach Larry Fedora and staff probably can’t help but lament “what if” for 2017, had Quarterback Mitch Trubisky stayed in school. It’s hard to blame him for striking while the iron was hottest, he was selected 2nd overall to the Chicago Bears. Instead, UNC will look to replace their starting QB (Trubiski), top two RBs (TJ Logan and Elijah Hood) and top 3 WRs (Mack Hollins, Ryan Switzer and Bug Howard) this season.

Wide Receiver Austin Proehl – 5100, 180 – Senior

Proehl is the son of long time NFL veteran Ricky, and he clearly takes after his father. Austin, just like his dad, is not the most physically imposing player but he wins with good route awareness of spacing and how to carry speed through is breaks. There are some flashes of very nice footwork on Proehl’s footwork, something that has been undoubtedly accentuated thanks to his family lineage. Proehl should be regarded as a potential slot option in the 2018 NFL Draft due to his technical skills but lack of high-end athletic traits.

Safety Donnie Miles – 5110, 210 – Senior

Miles was the third leading tackler for the Tar Heels last season, but impressively still tallied over 100 total tackles on the year. Miles made a ton of plays in the box but he did not make a lot of plays on the football in coverage. Safeties with primarily run defending duties do have a role in the NFL, but a more well-rounded 2017 would go a long way in alleviating some concerns that he’s a one-dimensional role player.

Cornerback M.J. Stewart – 6000, 200 – Senior

Our very own Joe Marino was present at the North Carolina Pro Day last year and he asked members of the program: “Who do we need to look for next year?” M.J. Stewart received rave reviews. He’s already highly regarded and rightfully so: he has a nose for the football. Stewart tallied 11 passes broken up and 2 forced fumbles in 2016.
